Fifth Maine Regiment Museum History Camps
We host our summer day camps at the museum's stunning Queen Anne style cottage built by Fifth Maine Regiment veterans, now a building on the National Register of Historic Places. We help children 8-11 and youth 12-14 discover the past by engaging them in creative projects with historic sites, artifacts, and photographs. In 2010, we offer:
History Comix Camp
History Comix campers! Create an original zine or comic story about the artists, clowns, and customers of Victorian-era amusements parks in Maine! Experience how people traveled by electric streetcars to carnivals a century ago; explore an amusement park while sketching the rides and vendors; brave the rides! Learn to juggle and make candy - while examining historic photos of carousels, Giggle Shows, and hot air balloons – all to stimulate your artistic imagination. Victorian Secrets:
Chemise? Drawers? Bustles? What does it all mean?
In this camp we'll explore the Victorian lady's wardrobe -- from the inside out. Enjoy the chance to use that new-fangled Victorian invention, the sewing machine - no previous experience necessary!
Campers will polish their sewing skills by creating their own lacey camisole and "vintage" handkerchief. Our final day will feature a campfire dinner and the chance to model period costumes in a Victorian fashion show.
